Meet the Bookworms! - Sarah Howes

Our Bookworm for November is long term volunteer and committee member Sarah Howes!

Sarah Howes of George Street Bookshop

How you help at the bookshop?

I volunteer in the shop and am also a director and co-treasurer.

Favourite Author (and why!)

I don’t have a favourite but two authors who are still writing whose new books I will always buy as soon as they are released are Clare Chambers and Becky Chambers. Very different writers but both tell great stories.

Favourite Book (and why!)

Again, I don’t really do favourites! It will depend on things like my mood, the time of year and whether I have time to embark on 600 pages as to whether I will reread or try something new. So it could be Trollope in autumn, children’s books at Christmas or something new and contemporary I’ve heard good things about.

Something you've been reading recently that you'd recommend

I’ve just started the third book in a historical trilogy by Elodie Harper which is set in Pompeii and follows a prostitute in her journey from a street brothel to the courtesan of a powerful man in Rome. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next though I have a feeling it won’t be a happy ending. I love to escape to other worlds through reading and historical fiction is a great way to do this. The trilogy starts with The Wolf Den.

Your pick of a book that's currently in store or online

There was a lovely first edition of Hamnet, the Women’s Prize for Fiction winner by Maggie O’Farrell in the shop last week. I haven’t read this but have enjoyed others by this author. It may have been snapped up though as it would make a lovely Christmas present!
